Josef M. Doeller
Josef M. Doeller was born in the Waldviertel region of Lower Austria; after gaining his first choral experience with the Altenburg Boys’ Choir under Leopold Friedl, he studied church music and music education at the MHS Vienna (organ: Michael Radulescu, choral conducting: Hans Gillesberger and Erwin Ortner, performance practice: Josef Mertin); member of the Arnold Schoenberg Choir;
1979 to 1983: Music Director of the Vienna Boys’ Choir (concert tours in Europe, North America, East Asia, and Australia; preparation of the boys’ choir for liturgical services in the Vienna Hofburg Chapel, for the State Opera and the Volksoper, and for cantata concerts with N. Harnoncourt).
1980 to 1984: Vicar Cantor of the Archdiocese of Vienna, teacher at the Diocesan Conservatory for Church Music in Vienna, and musician at the Cathedral of Wiener Neustadt. From 1984 to 2022: Director of Graz Cathedral Music (first-ever cathedral concerts featuring baroque instruments) and lecturer at the Institute of Church Music/KUG, as well as a guest speaker and conductor at composition workshops and choir seminars in Austria and abroad (Music Academy of Minsk, Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, Prague, Manila—Bamboo Organ Festival, Rome, Zagreb, Baroque Festival in Varaždin, International Bach Festival in Leipzig, among others).
In 1998, he launched an internationally acclaimed series with the Domkantorei, which he had founded: BACH XXI—bringing J.S. Bach’s cantatas into the 21st century: performances of all church cantatas according to their liturgical and chronological context. This long-term project reached its conclusion in May 2018 and was crowned with a cantata concert at St. Nicholas Church in Leipzig as part of the International Bach Festival 2022.
During Graz’s year as European Capital of Culture in 2003, he commissioned a composition from Michael Radulescu (“The Suffering and Death of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ”) and conducted the world premiere. Radio recordings and CD recordings.
Numerous other composition commissions and world premieres. J.M. Doeller performs as a freelance musician on a regular basis, including at the Mariahilf Evening Concerts (Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, Mass in B minor, Biber’s monumental Missa Salisburgensis, contemporary works; 2028: Schubert’s Mass in E-flat major), at the St. Paul, and in projects organized by the J.G. Zechner Society, among others—for example, participation in the project “The Raft of the Medusa” at the Dom im Berg in Graz; Doeller also continues to lead choir seminars, choir retreats, church music workshops, and choir conducting courses.

Josef M. Doeller ist im Waldviertel, NÖ geboren; nach ersten Chorerfahrungen bei den Altenburger
Sängerknaben unter Leopold Friedl studierte er Kirchenmusik und Musikerziehung
an der MHS Wien (Orgel: Michael Radulescu, Chorleitung: Hans Gillesberger und
Erwin Ortner, Aufführungspraxis: Josef Mertin); Mitglied im Arnold Schoenberg Chor;
1979 bis 1983 Kapellmeister bei den Wiener Sängerknaben (Konzertreisen in
Europa, Nordamerika, Ostasien, Australien, Vorbereitung des Knabenchores für
Liturgien in der Wiener Hofburgkapelle, für Staats- und Volksoper und für Kantaten-
Konzerte mit N. Harnoncourt).
1980 bis 1984 Vikariatskantor der Erzdiözese Wien, Lehrer am
Diözesankonservatorium für Kirchenmusik Wien und Musiker am Dom Wr. Neustadt.
Von 1984 bis 2022 Leiter der Grazer Dommusik (erstmalig Domkonzerte mit
Barockinstrumenten) und Dozent am Institut Kirchenmusik/KUG, Referent und
Dirigent bei Werkwochen und Chorseminaren im In- und Ausland (Musikakademie
Minsk, Tchaikovsky-Konservatrium Moskau, Prag, Manila – Bamboo Organ Festival,
Rom, Zagreb, Barockfestival Varazdin, Int. Bach-Fest Leipzig u.a.).
1998 rief er mit der von ihm gegründeten Domkantorei eine international beachtete
Reihe ins Leben: BACH XXI - mit den Kantaten von J.S.Bach in das XXI.
Jahrhundert: Aufführung sämtlicher Kirchenkantaten nach ihrer liturgisch-zeitlichen
Bestimmung. Das Langzeitprojekt erfuhr im Mai 2018 sein Finale und wurde mit
einem Kantatenkonzert in der Nikaolaikirce Leipzig im Rahmen des Int. Bachfestes
2022 gekrönt.
Im Kulturhauptstadtjahr Graz 2003 initiierte er einen Kompositionsauftrag an Michael
Radulescu („Leiden und Tod unseres Herrn und Heilands Jesus Christus“) und leitete
die Uraufführung. Rundfunk-Aufnahmen und CD-Einspielungen.
Zahlreiche weitere Kompositionsaufträge und Uraufführungen. J.M. Doeller tritt als
freischaffender Musiker regelmäßig u.a. bei den Abendmusiken Mariahilf auf (Bach
Matthäuspassion, h-Moll-Messe, Bibers monumentale Missa Salisburgensis,
zeitgenössiche Werke; 2028: Schuberts Messe in Es-Dur), beim Kultursommer St.
Paul, bei Projekten der J.G.Zechner-Gesellschaft u.a., z.B. Mitwirkung beim Projekt
"Das Floß der Medusa" im Dom im Berg/Graz; Doeller leitet weiterhin Chorseminare,
Chorsingtage, kirchenmusikalische Werkwochen und Chorleitungskurse.
